Columbia County Recovery Kitchen Hosts A “Planting Seeds” Garden Party
After a very wet week, Saturday, July 10 was perfect: the lushness of the flowers in Eric Spiegel’s Spencertown, New York garden rivaled the lusciousness of the hors d’oeuvres served up to about 75 delighted partygoers. The garden party’s theme was “planting seeds” to sustain the Recovery Kitchen’s mission: help end food insecurity in Columbia County. Farmers, gardeners, chefs, and other assorted friends of the Columbia County Recovery Kitchen sipped Prosecco and nibbled on grilled beef tenderloin with horseradish cream, duck rillettes with pickled sour cherries, and smoked trout with romesco sauce created by chef Jamie Parry and staff. Seventeen local farm stores and other purveyors of fine foods donated baskets brimming with goodies for the silent auction table.
The Columbia County Recovery Kitchen was created in April 2020 at the height of the pandemic by community-minded food advocates and chefs. The Kitchen has prepared approximately 50,000 healthy, balanced meals with fresh ingredients — from scratch — and delivered them via a cadre of volunteer drivers to county residents in need.
“Many in the county were food insecure even in the best of times, so the pandemic hit them the hardest. I saw then what I had to do, what I wanted to do,” said Recovery Kitchen founder Carole Clark. “But from the very beginning, it was the outpouring of support from the community, from you, that made it all work.”
