On Friday, July 11, Spencertown Academy Arts Center celebrated the opening of “Gee’s Bend: The Next Generation”—an exhibition and sale of more than 30 quilts, along with talks, workshops, and demonstrations that will run through August 3. Four of the quilters traveled from Gee's Bend Alabama to attend the party, including Loretta Pettway Bennett, Stella Mae Pettway, Emma Mooney Pettway, and Sharon Ann Williams, along with a special appearance by Willie Joe Pettway, son of iconic Gee’s Bend quilter Lola Pettway, who presented five quilts by his late mother. Acclaimed contemporary artist Ransome spoke about his paintings of Gee’s Bend quilters and two of his works were on display at the event courtesy of Carrie Haddad Gallery.
