Voices of Hope Gala Springs Eternal
Amy Krzanik reports from Lenox. Pittsfield’s Berkshire Immigrant Center held its annual fundraiser this past Saturday, December 7, 2013. The “Voices of Hope” holiday gala, at the warm and welcoming Seven Hills Inn, was a sold-out event. The night began with cocktails and a silent auction, followed by a special seasonal meal prepared by Castle Street Cafe chef Michael Ballon, who donated his services for the occasion. In between courses, guests were treated to songs sung by Robin Gerson Wong and Deborah Grausman, with help from the night’s pianist, Gerson Wong’s brother Roy Gerson. BIC’s Executive Director, Hilary Greene, spoke of the ways in which the Center helps local immigrants and immigrant Isla Chevalier offered a moving firsthand account of how she left Africa in her 20s due to harsh laws against unwed mothers and later was able to bring her daughter to the United States with help from the Center and its lawyers. A live auction helped raise even more funds, as the Inn’s proprietors, Denis Wong and Robin Gerson Wong (pictured), graciously doubled every winning bid of the evening. Proceeds from the evening go to fund BIC’s comprehensive services for individuals from more than 80 countries to promote civic engagement, facilitate cultural integration, and assist in navigating the complex U.S. immigration system.
