Fitch’s Corner Horse Trials Brimming with Flair
Dale Stewart reports from Millbrook, NY.
On any given Sunday, Millbrook’s hunt country already feels like the Cotswolds of the Hudson Valley. That feeling is heightened for one weekend each year during Fitch’s Corner Horse Trials. The multi-faceted event includes more than 300 horses competing in dressage, cross-country, and stadium show jumping, while guests roam the vast grounds of Fernanda Kellogg and Kirk Henckels’ sprawling horse farm. The event-packed weekend offers a laundry list of must-do activities from the Blue Jean Ball to the Collector Car Parade, but the de-rigueur event is The Spectator Luncheon, to benefit the Millbrook Rescue Squad. For the Luncheon on Sunday, July 22, guests traded in their breeches, riding boots, and helmets for chic summer dresses, sandals, and broad-brimmed hats, though anyone who found herself without a suitable hat could run across the way to the Fitch’s Market tent for some truly last-minute shopping and find a perfectly fetching model, as well as an entirely new ensemble, if she so desired. Luncheon honoree Mrs. Oakleigh B. Thorne (pictured left with Felicity Bunteqoue) received The Fitch’s Corner Award for service to the community and equestrian sport.
