Howard Fishman at Helsinki

Friday, October 29 @ 9 p.m.

It’s hard to categorize the music of Howard Fishman, which, according to The New York Times, “transcends time and idiom.” It doesn’t help that he just released his 7th, 8th, and 9th recordings—all of which are markedly distinct—at the same time. Not content with merely being prolific, he’s as proficient in the visual arts as in performing and composing music; his own paintings grace the covers for all three new releases. So it’s understandable that he originally pursued a career in theater; he worked at Williamstown Theatre Festival and started up a guerilla theater company in Poughkeepsie upon his graduation from Vassar. When that venture failed, he hopped a train for the Big Easy, learning from the greats and playing on the streets, eventually heading back north to strum in the subways of the Big Apple. In one of those great discovery stories, he was offered a two-week stint at the Algonquin Oak Roam that turned into nine-month gig, and thus his music career was born. You’ll find elements of Fishman’s dramatic background in his live performances, which are spontaneous and engaging.
